The Forest Grove United Church of Christ (FGUCC) will open their doors as a cooling center from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day that the mercury reads over 90 degrees for the next several weeks.

In a phone call with News in the Grove on Sunday morning, FGUCC Moderator Mary Mullen said she wasn't certain how many would use the new service.

"We'd like people to be comfortable," she said.

Cool drinks, board games, and company are offered.

Mullen said the church had also notified the Forest Grove Police Department and Forest Grove Fire & Rescue that their cooling center was opening.

NWS urges preparedness as heat wave looms
“Dangerously hot conditions with temperatures as high as 97 to 105 degrees expected, coupled with mild overnight low temperatures of 62 to 70 degrees” are in store for the Willamette Valley starting Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

"This is one thing we can do," she said.

Pets are not permitted.

The Forest Grove United Church of Christ is located in downtown Forest Grove at 2032 College Way.

On Monday, during open hours from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Mon-Thurs, the Forest Grove City Library also serves as a cooling center.
