Forest Grove launches new Civics Academy
The Civics Academy is a new, free program designed to give Forest Grove residents an understanding of the behind the scenes of how their local government operates, according to a post on the City of Forest Grove’s website.

The Forest Grove City Council recently launched a new Civics Academy program designed to help participants “get to know their city,” “get involved” and “make a difference.”
The Civics Academy is a new, free program designed to give Forest Grove residents an understanding of the behind the scenes of how their local government operates, according to a post on the City of Forest Grove’s website.
“The Civics Academy is a seven-week program, with each weekly session highlighting a different City department,” said Forest Grove Communications and Programs Manager Stephanie Fleischer in an email to News in the Grove. “Participants will learn about the role and operations of each department, have the opportunity to engage directly with staff through Q&A, and most sessions will include a behind-the-scenes tour to enhance the learning experience,” Fleischer continued.
The program will hold their weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. It will begin on Wednesday, Sept 10 and will conclude on Wednesday, Oct 22. The location of each session will vary depending on what will be covered, according to a post on the City of Forest Grove’s website.
Fleischer says that the main goal of the Civics Academy is to “increase understanding of how local government functions by offering community members a behind-the-scenes look at City operations.”
“By launching this program, we hope to foster greater civic engagement, encourage volunteerism, and strengthen connections between residents and City staff,” said Fleischer.
There is no prior experience or knowledge required to participate in the Civics Academy, and all backgrounds are welcome. The city of Forest Grove says that those who want to apply should live “within the city limits of Forest Grove,” be “ 18 years of age or older,” and want to “build relationships and be more civically engaged.” The program currently has room for 20 participants, and applications will close Aug. 8.
“The program is open to anyone interested in learning how local government works," said Fleischer in an email to News in the Grove. “We especially hope to engage residents who are curious about City operations, are considering getting involved in civic life, or want to build stronger connections within the community,” Fleischer continued.
Fleischer says that she and the Forest Grove City Council are excited to see the program “come to life,” and “look forward to engaging the community through this new program.”
