Forest Grove American Legion Post 2 will offer what they have a dubbed a "PTSD Sanctuary" to veterans affected by fireworks in the group's Legion Hall at 21st Avenue and Main Street.
With fireworks expected to rocket across the region on July 4 to celebrate the ratification of the Declaration of Independence 249 years ago, the noise and sight may prove distressing to some veterans and others.
"Even though fireworks are meant to entertain us, it is not uncommon for the sounds, intense light or smells to cause distress. Those who have gone through a trauma that included explosions, gunfire, loud noises or fire may be more likely to find fireworks to be a reminder—a trigger or cue—of such past events," the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said on a webpage with tips for handling fireworks as a veteran.
"It's our first time doing it," said American Legion Post 2 commander Dale Thaler in a phone call with News in the Grove.
The sanctuary will be open from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m.
"We'll have a TV set up for movies and some tables for games," he said. A poster for the event promised camaraderie as well.
Held in the basement of the American Legion Hall, Thaler hopes it will be soundproof enough to block the noise of fireworks.
No overnight stays are permitted.
The American Legion Hall, a brick building with a fresh coat of white paint, is located at 2003 21st Avenue in Forest Grove.
